I have to give my wife most of the credit for “Cover Me.” I had just recently started writing some songs and she told me that she had these two lines that she couldn’t get out of her head. “Cover me with Your love, cover me with your grace.” She could sing them to me, but hadn’t taken the time to sit down and come up with anything to go with them. After she finally got around to writing some more lyrics, I made a few additions and corrections and the song was done.
Starting with the lines that she aleady had (“cover me with Your love, cover me with Your grace”), the first question that needed to be answered was “why?” Why do we need God’s love and grace to cover us? And the obvious answer is our sin. As we fall down again and again, God is gracious to cover our sin with the blood of Jesus. It’s not a cover-up as though it didn’t happen. Instead, the awful penalty has already been paid in full. That is why Jesus is the pearl of great price that should compel us to dedicate our whole life to Him. That’s why “Cover Me” was created – as a simple song of worship.
Verse one
I don’t know where to start,
The choices made by me have broke Your heart, now I’m torn apart
Once again I’ve dropped the ball,
But no matter how many times I fall, still You call
Need to step out of the crowd,
Need to lay these burdens down, so here I bow
Chorus
Cover me with your love
Cover me with your grace
Cover me with your love
Cover me with your grace
Verse two
I’ve come to myself finally,
And even though I’m so unworthy, you forgive me
Found the pearl of great price,
Want to dedicate my whole life to You Christ
Can’t do this on my own,
The strength I need must come from You alone, You alone
Chorus
Cover me with your love
Cover me with your grace
Cover me with your love
Cover me with your grace
Bridge
I need Your mercy, Lord, I need Your grace
You paid the debt, You took my place
Cover me with your love
Cover me with your grace
Wash me white as snow
