Our mission team of twelve is currently on the way to eastern Europe to conduct two Bible camps for children next week. One of my roles on the trip is to teach the Bible story over the course of five days, sharing with these young people what Jesus has done for them. As I’ve been preparing over the last couple of weeks, I have been burdened by several aspects of this opportunity. How do I teach the gospel in language that young people can understand clearly, even though they’ve never heard the name of Jesus before? How do I simplify it even more so that it can be translated efficiently into at least one and maybe multiple different languages without losing that clarity? This is especially difficult for someone who has been practicing law for 25 years, a profession that prides itself on its loquaciousness! (you get that word free of charge)

Ukraine/Hungary Mission

My wife and I have an exciting opportunity to go on a mission trip to Hungary in early August of this year. Back in 2012, the Hungarian government passed a law which transferred responsibility for each public school in the country from the government to a non-profit organization. Hungarian Baptist Aid saw this as a God-given opportunity and took responsibility for 49 of the poorest schools in Hungary with a total of 17,000 children. Through partnership with North Carolina Baptists on Mission, Bible camps are held at several of these schools during the summer and our team will be providing one of these camps on our trip.

I was invited to preach for Mother’s Day at the church I grew up in and where my mom and most of my family still attend. The message identifies some lessons our mothers try to teach us based on David’s picture of a mother carrying her child to worship in Psalm 131. Click below to hear the audio.

This Sunday I have the pleasure of introducing our congregation (or most of them, anyway) to a new song as I lead worship. The song is “Hymn of Heaven” by Phil Wickham and you can find the video for the song below. The song is about the joy we will experience in heaven as we sing together in worship around the throne of God. One line of the song has always stood out to me: “And every prayer we prayed in desperation, the songs of faith we sang through doubt and fear, in the end, we’ll see that it was worth it, when He returns to wipe away our tears.”
