After breakfast, a devotion (our team is going through the book of Ephesians during our trip), and a primer on some Thai language and cultural do’s and don’t’s, we set off for the Mahanakhon, Bangkok’s tallest building. At the top of the building, there is an observation deck where you can look out over the whole city. There is even a glass platform you can step out onto and literally look down at some of the buildings.
We enjoyed the sights from there – the picture I’ve posted is my poor attempt at a panoramic picture of one side and I have no idea how it will turn out when I post it on here from across the world – but we also went up there to reflect on a city that is known worldwide for decadence in certain areas and a city that has shrines on most corners designed to ward off evil spirits. I prayed for all of the people that were within my line of sight from there – the number must have been huge – that they would come to know the truth about Jesus. I also prayed that God would somehow allow Christians to hold a sunrise service from the top of that building one day!
I was reminded of a story in the Old Testament (1 Samuel 4-5) where the Philistines capture the Ark of the Covenant, the symbol of God’s presence with Israel, and they take it back to one of their cities and place it with their idol to a false god named Dagon. The next morning when they check on it, the Dagon idol has fallen face down next to the ark. They set the idol of Dagon back upright and the next day when they check, the idol has fallen again, but this time both the head and hands have been cut off! There are idols everywhere here – but God will have the final word.
When I was able to get connected to the internet again, I saw that my wife had sent me this passage of Scripture she had read that day. She thought it would be relevant to my trip and she was right: Psalm 115:1-11
