When I was in the process of writing songs for my “Champion of My Life” album, I decided to study some of the songs in the Bible. Now, when you think about songs in the Bible, most people immediately think about the book of Psalms. Psalms is referred to as God’s Songbook and so it’s no surprise that it’s the first thing that comes to mind. But there are songs throughout the Bible and one of the places where you see this is in Revelation. In the book of Revelation, we get a peek into what God is listening to in his throne room – God’s playlist, if you’ll let me use a modern expression.
My song, “Worthy,” was an attempt to take those throne room songs and share this idea of worthiness that we see repeated so often in Revelation. The lyrics are based on Revelation 4 and 5. In the chorus from Revelation 5, the angels are around the throne singing “Worthy is the Lamb.” In chapter 4, they sing “Worthy are you, our Lord and God.” My favorite part of the song also comes from chapter 4, where four bizarre looking creatures are described that do nothing all day and night but sing, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.”
Some may picture that scene and think, “what kind of self-centered God would need that sort of affirmation 24/7?” That’s where the word “worthy” comes in. Worthy was a word that initially was used when talking about balancing scales. If something was weighty enough to balance whatever was on the other side of the scale, it was “worthy” of it. And so these creatures are saying that no matter what we pile up on the other side of the scale from God – praise, honor, power, wealth, strength, etc – God is the only one who can possibly balance those things – He is worthy. So while for you and me, this scene and song would be vanity, in the case of Almighty God, it is a statement song of an eternal truth.
