One of my favorite songs right now is a new one from MercyMe called “Flawless.” The song tells us that no matter what scars, bumps, bruises, and pain we have, the cross of Christ has made us flawless. Can that be right? I’ll be honest, there aren’t very many days that I feel flawless – none to be exact. If being flawless means that I’m perfect and don’t make mistakes or that I’m better than everyone else around me, than this song is a lie. I fall very short of being flawless.
Flawless is not who we are. Flawless is how God sees us once we are covered by Christ’s sacrifice.
Wow. Read that one again. Does this truth mean that it doesn’t matter how I live my life? I can do whatever I want and God will only see me as perfect? Well – yes. Although if you are able to sin repeatedly and not be convicted, I would have to question whether you have truly accepted Christ. There’s more to this idea than our freedom to sin.
We are free from something much more powerful – a captivity that still holds so many Christians today because they don’t truly understand how God sees them. We are free from working our tails off or accomplishing things to obtain the approval of God. God is not interested in how many church events we attend, or how many acts of service we do, or even how “good” of a Christian we are. In fact, the Bible says that if we are doing these things out of selfish motives like trying to earn our salvation, they actually count against us! (Look at Isaiah 64:6.)
The great truth is this: the cross is all that was necessary for our salvation. We can add nothing to it and we aren’t going to get anywhere working for something that we have already obtained. Instead, the things that we do should be acts of worship and thanksgiving to God. This is a truth that I struggled with for many, many years. But I can testify that when you stop seeing the “good deeds” or “acts of service” that you do as the way to cause God to love you more and you start seeing what a privilege it is to do these things for Him out of love for Him, you become a much happier person and you don’t have the burnout and resentment that builds up when you are working for yourself. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have to prove yourself to God – he already sees you as flawless.
Here’s the song and the lyrics are below – enjoy! And go check out MercyMe’s webpage for a lot of other great songs.
There’s got to be more
Than going back and forth
From doing right to doing wrong
‘Cause we were taught that’s who we are
Come on get in line right behind me
You along with everybody
Thinking there’s worth in what you do
Then Like a hero who takes the stage when
We’re on the edge of our seats saying it’s too late
Well let me introduce you to amazing grace
No matter the bumps
No matter the bruises
No matter the scars
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
No matter the hurt
Or how deep the wound is
No matter the pain
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
Could it possibly be
That we simply can’t believe
That this unconditional
Kind of love would be enough
To take a filthy wretch like this
And wrap him up in righteousness
But that’s exactly what He did
No matter the bumps
No matter the bruises
No matter the scars
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
No matter the hurt
Or how deep the wound is
No matter the pain
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
Take a breath smile and say
Right here right now I’m ok
Because the cross was enough
Then Like a hero who takes the stage when
We’re on the edge of our seats saying it’s too late
Well let me introduce you to grace grace
God’s grace
No matter the bumps
No matter the bruises
No matter the scars
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
No matter the hurt
Or how deep the wound is
No matter the pain
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
No matter what they say
Or what you think you are
The day you called His name
He made you flawless
He made you flawless
No matter the bumps
No matter the bruises
No matter the scars
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
