Help Me To Trust

trust“Help Me to Trust” was the first song that I wrote for my band, Franciso Road. My family was going through a pretty big transitional period at the time. We were searching for a new church for the first time in my life. In addition, the background reasons that we were looking for a new church were such that I was asking God a lot of “why” questions. I wanted to trust that He was leading me on a journey for a good reason, but I couldn’t see it at the time. All I could see was a lot of unanswered questions and an uncertain future.

One July morning, I was reading a devotional from a book we had received (ironically, I guess) from a church we had recently visited. The subject was faith and the author listed several Bible stories where the main character was asked to do something even when it seemed to make little sense. It pointed out that God had always come through for those who acted in faith. It was one of those moments where I could feel God speaking directly to me. I wanted to have faith like David, or Gideon, or Abraham – but I had to admit I wasn’t anywhere close.

Our drummer, Kevin, joked that the second verse was “the entire Old Testament in a song.” But the folks I included in that verse came straight from that devotion that July morning.

And though my faith was weak – God was faithful and came through for me and my family. He always does.

Here I am again down on my knees tonight
Another crisis, another trial, and I’m asking why
It seems like circumstances are so messed up and You’ve left me on my own
I can’t make out how this heartbreaking situation
Could ever lead to anything that You might work for good
It’s hard to take a step when I can’t seem to see where it will land
But You call me to have faith, say Your ways are not my ways, and so I pray

CHORUS:
Help me to trust when I don’t understand
Help me to be confident in Your master plan
I may not comprehend it all, but You won’t let me fall
Lord, help me to trust when I don’t understand

When Abraham led Isaac up the mountain
Did he fear that You had forgotten Your promises
Did Gideon feel all alone when you told most of his army to go home
When Lazarus died, did Martha see the reason
Why Your response to her cry for help was so delayed
Did Joseph feel deserted by You when jailed for doing only what was right

CHORUS:
Help me to trust when I don’t understand
Help me to be confident in Your master plan
I may not comprehend it all, but You won’t let me fall
Lord, help me to trust when I don’t understand

You never promised all the answers in advance,
but You’ll take care of me, You’ll be there with me,
and You are good

CHORUS:
Help me to trust when I don’t understand
Help me to be confident in Your master plan
I may not comprehend it all, but You won’t let me fall
Lord, help me to trust when I don’t understand
You’re in control, what else is there to know?
Lord, help me to trust when I don’t understand
